Cisco likes to pretend that it is one big company but Cisco is actually made up of the dozens of different companies (called Business Units) that all fight each other for funding and resources from the “Cisco federal executive” or some such central body. It helps to keep that in mind while you try to work out why Cisco makes crazy products lines that overlap or flat out compete with other †- see:

But, for my money, the prize for the weirdest business unit in Cisco is the EOS Media and Entertainment division.
Cisco EosÆ is a hosted software platform that enables Media & Entertainment companies to more efficiently create, manage and grow high-value social entertainment experiences built around their branded content. Eos’ integrated approach incorporates features from social media, content management and audience analytics into a unified, cloud-based application.
Yeah, because nothing says “Together We Are the Human Networkô” like having a way to rub shoulders with entertainment executives and meet pop music stars and models.
Which is the only reason I can figure Cisco got into this business.†Check out the customer list on the right side there. Warner Music ? Huh?
Someone wanted to do an “EMC Marketing VP” and try and make themselves famous with Cisco’s money.
