Reviewing a Threat report from Fortinet Networks suggests that 73% of internet traffic is now encrypted. Thats a substantial change in five years for a network protocol.
- More than I expected but good news that the status quo CAN be changed.
- I wonder what happened to telcos that were selling data extracted from capturing HTTP traffic metadata. HTTPS gives much less metadata but I figure its still useful when correlated with data collected elsewhere by Google/Facebook/Quantcast etc.
- This report is slanted too heavily to FUD marketing and wore me out. I felt that the authors were trying to hard to beat the ‘scary security’ FUD drum and its comes through. For example this title “MINI FOCUS: IS CRYPTOJACKING JACKING UP YOUR DEFENSES?” is fear mongering, and this “BAD TRAFFIC ON THE WEEKEND?” is intended to create uncertainty. I don’t mind a vendor doing some but lets avoid security hysteria. I need a good lie down after reading this.
