I use the term “Finger Banging the Network” to describe the process of configuring network devices at the CLI. The device CLI is powerful, feature-complete and the definitive method from network configuration. It’s also a boring, error-prone and tedious method to configure repetitive tasks like configuring VLANs.
Usage:
Engineer: “I’ll get start on the finger banging them. ”
I’ll be down in the data centre finger banging those devices.
Note that “Finger Banging” is a polite conversational version of the original term “Button F**king” which might be more relevant at 2:00am when cussing out the common and easily made mistakes that the CLI creates.
