“Best of breed” was originally derived from breeding animals such as dogs. Within a given breed of dog, you would strive to produce the best dog for a given attribute such as size, or pug nose, or speed or agression and so on. The result would be described as “best of breed”, that is, you have a good dog that has a specific feature and probably genetically defective in several other areas e.g. many doberman breed are so large that their spines cannot handle their weight and they have to be killed when reasonably young.
In technology, “best of breed” means defining the category so small or specific that you become the best in that category.
For example, here are some of my favourite “best of breed” categories
- “Best 4-port Ethernet switch with SNMP Management over $1000” )one of Cisco’s favourites
- “10 Gigabit ethernet switch using merchant silicon and having 8K buffers per port and is white”……… 🙂
- “Firewall by weight” means firewall uses old silicon designs and big heavy cases – one of Checkpoint / Nokia favourite categories.
- “Best packet inspection capability in class ” means support for finger and XDCMP protocols
I’d be interested if anyone can think of other specific product categories ?
