The first thing I thought of when I saw this slide is that Cisco UCS will be integrated ACI in short order. It seems like the obvious competitive response to VMware ESX ability to virtualise the hypervisor.
I asked the question during my briefing and got an answer that indicated that wider integration of Cisco products, including security and UCS, is the obvious progression for ACI over time.
Given that Cisco onePK is aimed at this market and enabling this type of capability, and that onePK has been underway for quite some time I think that this seems likely to be announced in the next year or so.
It won’t take much to integrate UCS Manager since most of the team that designed and built UCS is at Insieme already. And with Cloupia / UCS Director products Cisco has tools for managing & orchestrating many third-party assets like NetApp.
It strikes me that the ACI part we have seen is just the first steps of a product that is barely out of the first stage of development. The ACI software doesn’t ship until 2H2014 and I expect that there will be many more announcements to build customer interest in the year ahead. It possible that this is just the first salvo.
I’ll be keeping my SDN Unicorn and popcorn handy.
