Youtube video on the Broadcom telemetry solution that uses the features of the ASIC and the BroadView Analytics confirms an industry-wide feature convergence around physical and virtual network visibility.
The telemetry use for programmable ASICs is comon to every ASICs vendor. I’ve seen near-identical pitch from Barefoot and Innovium for their ASIC but without the monitoring software.
Aside: The Cisco solution based on Nexus Cloudscale ASICs (actually from Avago) and Tetration started their marketing early on the same idea although the extra money & focus that Cisco can bring to bear means that Tetration feature set is may grow more quickly than some others.
Cisco started the marketing early but has been slow to ship products as I understand it. The high pricing may be intended to limit early shipments as they work out what features customers are interested in.
If you want to build your own telemtry monitoring, I am told at Apache Metron is a possible open source option.
