Review: How Close Was My Top5 on Cisco’s Viral Marketing for ASR9000

November 17, 2008 by Greg Ferro · Leave a Comment

Couple of weeks ago I posted Top 5 things about Cisco’s Viral Marketing announcement. How did I do ?

5 — Another product escaped from the lab early and the engineers haven’t been able to stop it. It will be ready for use in two or three years time.

Yep. Bang on the money.

4 — That it will use “Microsoft-style standards” (that are almost, but not quite the actual standard e.g. Data Centre Ehternet®) to ensure that marketing department can crow about ‘leadership’.

I’m not sure. There are several “enhancements”

“• Hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Service (H-VPLS) pseudowire redundancy with VPLS MAC withdrawal: When an access pseudowire is used to connect into the VPLS network — a technology known as Hierarchical VPLS (H-VPLS) — pseudowire redundancy can be extended to protect the access pseudowire. Combined with VPLS MAC withdrawal technology, pseudowire redundancy in the H-VPLS scenario can be used to avoid a possible packet-oriented black hole.”

“In addition, the Cisco ASR 9000 supports new Cisco IOS XR Software innovations such as Multicast-only FRR (MoFRR) to improve multicast network convergence times even more.”

and others. I can’t be bothered to research them so let’s pass over this one.

3 — It will have virtualisation buzzwords stuck all over it. Very good chance of cloud computing buzzwords for extra bingo opportunities. In fact, its possible that there is no actual product at all, just buzzing about Cloud Computing.

I got this wrong. My mistake, its not data centre, its a service provider product and that is all about uptime / availability / upgradability etc etc etc.

2 — Whatever it is, it will help to solve the business problems of the Credit Crunch by saving you money.

“In addition to offering a unique service and application-level intelligence that focuses on optimized video delivery and mobile aggregation, Cisco ASR 9000 Series routers are also equipped with the support of a full set of service activation and provisioning systems that are designed to simplify and enhance the operational and deployment aspects of service-delivery networks.”

I have no idea what that means. Do I need medical help or is this just verbal overrun ?

1 — CiscoWorks management tools are getting a massive overhaul and now they will actually do something useful.

Sadly, nothing announced. I live in hope though.

Ivan gets its right

Double points to Ivan Pepneljak who pointed out that it will have “green” everywhere. Sure enough:

“Carrier Ethernet Foundation for Visual Networking

Central to the Cisco IP NGN Carrier Ethernet Design, the ASR 9000 Series delivers scale and non-stop video experience in a reduced carbon footprint for unsurpassed levels of carrier transport.”

Frankly amazing. Nothing of substance. What’s next ?

Sigh.
