Network Dictionary – Tribal Knowledge

In a team of engineers, there is a certain amount of shared experiences and skills. Some part of that knowledge will relate to the system that is shared aka “the network”. Each network is similar and different.

Part of the operational lore for a network will include knowledge of the data flows, and the IP address of the core switches, and their software versions. Probably a working knowledge of known bugs in the current firmware, and shared experiences of the “problems that have happened before”.

This shared knowledge is often described as “tribal knowledge”.

So called business consultants calls “unique business value” or “proprietary knowledge”. Which is tosh, it’s just a shared experience that makes the business process more efficient and this more profitable.
