Network Dictionary — TLA and eTLA
May 22, 2008 by Greg Ferro · 2 Comments
TLA is a recursive acronym for Three Letter Acronym.
Which is pretty funny.
eTLA — eXtended Three Letter Acronym — used to describe four letter acronym.
Which is even funnier.
Note the use of best marketing practice with dropped ‘e’. Very kewl
Who said nerds don’t have any humour.

Network Dictionary — Acronyminy
acronyminy — (akkro — nim — ih — nee)
The disjointed sensation of knowing what an acronym means, but not remembering the exact words because you have used it so often you no longer think of it as an abbreviation.
aka, “What does the acronym OSPF stand for ? Uh, protocol 89, uses multicast on a broadcast networks, has 5 message types, classless routing protocol ”
“I can’t remember what is stands for though!”
Network Dictionary — Kewl
“kewl” is the network geeks word that has the same meaning as gnarly (surfer culture), sick (teen subculture), wicked (american movies). That is, it can mean something magnificent, or something so retarded or mind bendingly stupid as to be beneath contempt and varying degrees in between. Not normally used in executive meetings or board level presentations. Most commonly observed when a colleague shows you a neat Cisco IOS CLI trick, or a new piece of OS X software.
Pronunciation
Usually pronounced “queue-well”, and the more kewl something is, the more emphasis on “Queue” there is. Derogatory invocations typically involve substantial quantities of dripping sarcasm.
Network Dictionary — Mendicant
Mendicant ( Men — dee — cant) is a term I use to describe people who have chosen to pursue the CCIE study path. Although the dictionary refers to a Mendicant as a religious person who relies on gifts or begging for to survive, I like to use the extended definition from Wikipedia
” in order that all their time and energy could be expended on practicing or preaching their religion or way of life and serving the poor.”
While Cisco isn’t a religion, the study and learning process has some monastic qualities such as all time spent studying or practicing, poverty due to study and lab time.
Thus, a CCIE student, should be considered a MENDICANT.
