Network Dictionary – Pixen

pixen – (picks-sen)

The correct term for a group of PIX firewalls. I have decided that the correct term is Pixen after banging my head on the desk for much of the day.

PIXen – derived from the term Vaxen The plural canonically used among hackers for the DEC VAX computers

Terms deprecated as a result of this advisory –

pixes just looks naff
pixies not usable in a corporate settings
pix The plural noun form just doesn’t work. For example: sheep is one sheep two sheep etc. Problem is the people don’t understand or comprehend that term in a sentence full of other jargon.

Consider: So if we drop the ASA into VLAN for the VPN head end at the top of DC SONA chain, migrate the ACL and config ready for the flip.

  1. John Coke says:

In addition to PIXen, I’ve also been known to use the term boxen.

  2. Greg Ferro says:

Also a favourite of mine, however, this term is mostly pwned by Unix people and (by my very ruf’n'reddy rules) not suitable for the Network Dictionary. Suggestions always welcome.

    See below:

    boxen: /bok-sn/, pl.n.

[very common; by analogy with VAXen] Fanciful plural of box often encountered in the phrase ‘Unix boxen’, used to describe commodity Unix hardware. The connotation is that any two Unix boxen are interchangeable.

  3. I love it. How about a group of ASA’s?

  4. Ed says:

    What about pixii (pronounced pix-eye)?
Or maybe just say, “A plethora of pix”?
