I am looking at re-certification the CCIE R/S and looking for tips on what people used to study.

Obviously the Cisco Press Routing and Switching V3.0 from Wendell is a biggie, but what about other resources such as NLI R/S Written book.

In particular, I would something that has questions and answers, because that makes it easier to cope with the exam.

Note: I am not interested in hearing about braindumps etc.

I am wondering if anyone is actually using IPV4 Anycast to provide high availability to their Data Centre's ? I haven't seen it in a live network and was wondering if I had missed out on seeing it used ?

The OSI is a great model, but I think that there must be some flexibility in interpretation. I don’t necessarily agree with some others interpretation of it. I look at it like this. On the sending side data flows down the osi. On the receiving side it flows up the osi. At intermediary hops, it may flow up and down the bottom 3 layers (at a router), or the bottom two layers (at a switch), or at any other point (at a proxy or protocol gateway).

Many books and posts classify HTTP and SMTP at the application layer. I disagree with this. Like RPC, these are session layer. If you look at the exchange on a wire, it the HTTP or SMTP commands begin following the Transport Headers information and are typically identified by the TCP or UDP port. They issue the flow control for commands that influence the transmission of raw ASCII or HTML. ASCII and HTML are presentation layer protocols. Documentation also classifies Traceroute and FTP as application protocols. Traceroute I would probably agree with, and ftp I agree with when you consider the FTP application. The FTP protocol itself (PUT, LIST, PASV, PORT etc), I consider session layer.

I know these will likely not be the correct answer on some tests, but this is the way that I view and understood them. When you use a protocol analyzer regularly, you quickly realize this stuff is sort of like peeling the layers off an onion. Assuming that I am just totally incorrect in my interpretation of the OSI, I would still say that’s okay since I am successful with troubleshooting and deployment of this view. OSI is simply a model to help us visually understand how systems communicate. Many disagree with me on this. I am curious as to the thoughts of others.

How about this ?

acronyminy - (akkro - nim - inee)

the disjointed sensation of knowing what an acronym means, but not remembering the exact words because you have used it so often you no longer think of it as an abbreviation.

The new forum looks great. It integrates with your overall site design perfectly.

Do you have a suggestion for a word that describes people (mostly management but sometimes IT staff) who know what an abreviation or acronym stands for - and nothing else:

"So we might need to implement SIP."
"Ah yes, SIP. Session Initiation Protocol." <nods knowingly>
"Ummm...yeah. Do you know what SIP does?"
"It 's a protocol that initiates the session."
<head explodes>

This bugs me because I often forget what the abreviation actually stands for but I know how that technology works. I can break down DSCP to the bit level and explain why one binary number is significantly different than another, but I get tripped up by someone asking me what DSCP stands for and then rolling their eyes when I can't remember that DSCP stands for Differentiated Services Code Point. Argh!
