Dynamips on a MacBook Pro

I am doing some proof of concept for an MPLS data centre and did something I have not normally done. I used my MacBook Pro to run Dynamips / Dynagen. I am very pleased with 9 3640 routers running Enterprise Plus, and 2 2611 Routers with IP and running less than 60% CPU across both cores

This means that I have still have enough resources to run quite few other programs including Parallels (although it does run a little slow). I have an older MacBook Pro, but upgraded to to 4 GB RAM. I found that the 2 x 2GB RAM modules run faster than 1 x 2Gb (as you might expect) but its a shame that only 3GB can be used or I could have quite a few more.

I won’t repeat what other people have said about Dynamips, but running it on OS X Leopard is very fine indeed.

    Hi there,

Although I find it helpful, I have to mention that I am new to the whole MAC world. I don’t know anywathing about OSX to be honest but really need to get dyngen/dynamips working.

I installed on Tiger and it worked like a charm, but on Leopard with this Super User, etc…I am lost

    Could you please assist

    Installed Dynagen/Dynamips in Standard folder.
    Applications/Dynagen

Could you please assist to get this puppy going as I get the Password Prompt every time I try and execute the Dynamips Server

    Cheers

    Jacques

You need to run dynamips as root, to do this you just put ‘sudo’ in front of the startup command. See my other article on how to do ths.

Dynamips / Dynagen on Macbook Pro or iMac runs great. I love the software and thank the Dynamps/Dynagen team to come up with such a great software.

If Microsoft Windows can not support Dynamips then it is Intel/Microsoft problem not Dynamips. Its time to move on to Unix platform such as Apple.

I love Apple computers. They are the best thing happened against Microsoft. Plus they support Windows better than any other regular Intel computers such as Dell or HP or any other Windows based computers.

    Have fun with Apple.

    Good Luck.

    Adil.

On nearly the same platform (I have a 2.2 GZh MBP) I just replicated the Lab for the Cisco-Training “Implementing Cisco MPLS”. When all 17 Routers (7200, AdvEnt. 12.4(15)T8) are running, the CPU goes to about 85%. But you can still work with the box. If anyone want’s the config, you can download it from http://security-planet.de/2009/02/22/training-implementing-cisco-mpls/. The site is in german, but I think it shouldn’t be to hard to find the Download …
