I can't thank you enough for this information! I've been working on a budget for the upcoming fiscal year for over a week now, and wasn't even getting close. Now I'll have it finished by the beginning of next week. Great post!

That's not correct, only gold partners and direct customers know to ask for it. Most people don't even know that the price list exists so don't know that they can request it from their distributor. There are no restrictions on who can access what is public information.

As a Cisco partner, I can tell you that only Gold partners and direct customers have this access. Everyone else has to use the new web-based pricing which is searchable, but it's nice to have the list like you mentioned.

My understanding is that this will vary from country to country. Very few companies have direct purchasing from Cisco. Note also that some countries do not use the US Retail Price List. For some countries where Cisco has a substantial market position, Cisco will publish a different price list with a higher retail price and you will need to get that Retail Price List for your spreadsheet.

Only works for those partners that have those systems in place. And not many partners could do this because their quoting and accounting systems are not that advanced. You are warned. Thanks Jeff.

I think all the vendors do this, however, getting those price lists is not easy. Mostly because they don't make them publicly available (which Cisco does) and, basically, they don't sell as much as Cisco does therefore people haven't bothered to ask for them.

A lot of sales people don't like losing control of their customers and won't give the price lists. It is false belief that doesn't serve customers very well. The easier it is to plan to buy something, the more likely it is that you will buy it.

Does anybody know how other vendors do this same kind of thing? I am interested in being able to get this same info for Foundry/Brocade and also for HP Procurve. Any thoughts on that?

I live off that list for my job!

One other note for this is that if you save the Configuration from the Configurator as Enhanced XML your VAR can typically import it into their system to generate an official quote.

Depending on the way that your reseller purchases your SmartNET, you can use the sales order number that's on the receipt to give pricing access to your CCO account. In your CCO profile, go to Additional access, I think it's called "Order direct from Cisco". Punch in the PO or SO number, and you can have pricing access added for you.

With that access, the configuration tool includes pricing, and of course, you can download the price spreadsheet at will.

I've had this access for the last three companies I've worked at by doing that. Failing that, go to your Cisco Account Manager and beg for the access :)

In terms of your discount level, send out an RFQ to all the resellers that can service you and ask for a master standing offer with a set discount off of list for both Smartnet and product in return for exclusivity. Give a rough list of what you plan to buy over the next year, and make them compete against each other for your business.

With the MSO, the worst case is you get the same discount level they were going to give you anyway, at best, you get a couple of points off of that. If you normally treat your vendors as someone that just processes an order rather than a presales consultant it helps, because their margin doesn't have to cover the presales stuff.

The practicality of the MSO depends on your corporate policy, though.
