Internets of Interest: 14th Jan – 15th Jan

Collection of useful, relevant or inane places on the the Internets for 15th Jan:

  • Nortel begs for bankruptcy protection • The Register – Nortel says parrot is not nailed to the perch. Customers heard saying "This parrot wouldn't go _voom_ if you put fifty thousand volts through it".

History will repeat and Nortel will end up like Cabletron (if you remember back that far), Business units will be sharded and cast out onto the market winds, I predict they will all fail due to bad management and entrenched poor practice. I feel sorry for Nortel employees however, since many of the engineers did good work in spite of the company.

  • Computerworld – NTT details IPv6-powered TV service – Is this the beginning of the IPv6 rollout ? It will only take one or two major players to deliver on IPv6 and I think IPv6 rollouts will become an avalanche (and the recession will not matter).
  • SCO auctions Unix and mobile assets to continue fight • The Register – Does SCO continue to think that easy money can be found using the US legal system ? Looks that way. I think this leaves them as a shell for litigation, like the patent trolls. Much sadness for a once great business.
